Foam in your hot tub is an issue that’s all too common, but it doesn’t have to be! The most effective way to prevent foam from forming is by maintaining proper water balance and eliminating chemicals and solids from the mix.
First, test your water and adjust its pH, alkalinity and calcium levels according to the product directions. If any of these chemical levels are out of range, drain and refill with fresh, clear water.
Next, use an enzyme-based chemical to break down non-living organic contaminants that may cause foaming. Enzymes are naturally derived from plants and non-toxic, meaning they won’t harm your family or pets.
Another effective way to prevent foam formation in your hot tub is for everyone who uses it to thoroughly rinse off any lotions, body oils and cosmetics before entering. Additionally, remember to shower before entering so as not to bring in dirt, sweat or other impurities.
Finally, don’t forget to inspect your yard for any dead leaves or blossoms that could be contributing to the problem. These can clog pipes, so be sure to clear out the pipes and clear away any leaves or other debris.
You can also add vinegar and baking soda to your water at a 10:1 ratio. This mixture acts as an effective natural defoamer, helping keep the water from foaming over.
However, if the foaming persists, it could be indicative of an imbalance in your water or too many surfactants. This can occur if you use too much water care product or your family spends a great deal of time in the hot tub.
To eliminate foaming in your hot tub, you have two options: add anti-foam chemicals regularly or drain and refill with fresh, clean water. We suggest doing this at least once a month in order to prevent future foaming issues.

How to Eliminate Foam in Your Hot Tub
If you’ve exhausted all other options and still experiencing foam in your hot tub, it may be time for a permanent solution. Defoamers and anti-foamers are only temporary fixes that don’t address the underlying cause of the problem; thus, the only real way to prevent foam in your hot tub is by following these steps:
Maintain a Balanced Water Environment
Foamy hot tub water often comes from overly-thick or old water sources and may indicate an accumulation of total dissolved solids (TDS), or TDS for short. TDS includes various substances like soap residue, remnants of laundry detergent on bath suits and even deodorant.
